National parks are great places to go with dogs, and Acadia National Park is one of the best. There are more than 100 miles of trails to explore, and a free dog-friendly bus takes cyclists around the park and the island itself.

Try trails like the Precipice Trail, Champlain Mountain & Beehive Loop Trail, and Gorham Mountain Trail. Campgrounds like Blackwoods and Seawall accept pets for overnight stays. Just outside the national park boundary is Little Long Pond, a 1,000-acre park where dogs can run free.

There is a restaurant inside the park and the good news is that pets are welcome! Since 1893 Guests of Acadia National Park can enjoy spectacular views and celebrate at the Jordan Pond House. Travelers who plan their New England itinerary with their pet in mind may want to spend a few days on Cape Cod. There are plenty of dog-friendly activities and attractions for you and your furry companions, like the beautiful beaches of Cape Cod National Seashore and Nauset Light Beach, where they can swim in the shallow waters. 

In addition to its dog-friendly beaches, Cape Cod is famous for its pet-friendly restaurants and shops. After a day in the sun, head to Barnstable Brewing and Cape Cod Beer in Hyannis and relax at their outdoor seating with a local snack and a pup by your side. Mashpee Commons is a charming downtown shopping district with doors open to all, including furry friends.

Bar Harbor tops the list of pet-friendly getaways. It’s full of things to do, starting with hiking together in Acadia National Park (see #1). Relax together on a two-hour narrated boat tour of Frenchman Bay, offering breathtaking views of the Maine coast, Acadia National Park, and the islands of Frenchman Bay. 

For dinner, most restaurants are happy to welcome pets while dining outdoors. Leary’s Landing Irish Pub, Finback Ale House and Cottage St. The pubs are famous Fido spots.

Without a doubt, Newport offers one of the best dog-friendly vacations in the country. Start with the 3.5-mile Cliff Walk for sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. Being close to the precipice it is better to keep the furry friend on a leash. Take a lunch break at Sardella’s or O’Brien’s Pub, which offers a dog-friendly menu and water for everyone.

The Blue Ridge Parkway, which runs conveniently through town, has several pet-friendly hiking trails, such as the Mountains-to-Sea Trail and Craggy Garden. The historic Biltmore Estate allows dogs on leashes in designated outdoor areas, including the many beautiful gardens.

When you’re ready to eat, Wicked Weed Brewing, White Duck Taco Shop, and Sunny Point Café are known for their delicious food and pet-friendly policies. There’s also a thriving wine scene in Asheville, with vineyards like Addison Farms welcoming wine lovers and their dogs.

Burlington is a great pet friendly weekend getaway, especially if you like to be active. Start with a ride or walk along the Burlington Bike Trail, a scenic trail that runs alongside Lake Champlain. Head to Church Street Marketplace, a pedestrian-only promenade lined with shops, restaurants, and street performers. You and your dog can enjoy the lively atmosphere as long as they are on a leash.

Waterfront Park is a great place to take a walk, have a picnic, or just relax and enjoy your surroundings. If you’ve had enough of nature, order a beer at Zero Gravity Craft Brewery or grab a bite to eat at the lively Burlington Farmers Market.
