Dog-friendly Airbnb Listings – Before Airbnb was created, most of the major accommodation booking sites had fairly rigid pet policies. But with Airbnb, it’s easier than ever to find and book a place that allows travelers to bring their pets.
After explaining Airbnb’s pet policy (including fees, service animals and policy violations), I’ll show you (step-by-step) how to find and book a pet-friendly Airbnb listing, what to look for in a dog-friendly listing . and what to do if you want to bring your cat.

Reasons a host may prohibit pets include allergies, to avoid extra cleaning, or because Airbnb does not cover pet damage. Deciding whether or not to allow pets is an important decision for all Airbnb hosts, which is sure to win or lose potential guests either way.
*Many experienced travelers find Vrbo.com better than Airbnb for apartment and home rentals (many also allow pets). To see today’s listings on Vrbo, click here.
Instead, hosts have the right to include their own (in their listing description). A pet fee can cover cleaning costs or simply act as “pet insurance” for acute damage or accumulated wear and tear. Fees can range from $5 to over $100. Since many guests will consider their pet a member of the family, it is reasonable for hosts to ask for it.
Pet fees (if applicable) will not be reflected in the full price of your booking at checkout. Instead, your host will send you the fee amount as a price adjustment after booking. This is another reason why you should read the full description of a listing and contact potential hosts before booking; so you will receive this information in advance.

Some hosts charge a “pet deposit” (payable in cash upon check-in) rather than a pet fee. If your pet does not cause any “problems” during your stay, the deposit will be refunded upon check-out. But if there is a problem, the repair/cleaning costs will be deducted from your deposit.
Service animals (usually service dogs) are trained to help humans with tasks including vision, navigation and neurological skills. Emotional support animals (ESAs) provide therapeutic effects and/or comfort to people (as treatment or therapy). Click here to read Airbnb’s detailed definitions of these terms.
Airbnb recognizes that service animals are not the same as pets, and they affect how their human partners function in common daily tasks. According to Airbnb, hosts are expected to reasonably accommodate bookings where a service animal may be present, even if the listing/house rules say ‘no pets’.
But not all properties are suitable for service animals, so let your potential host know before booking. If your service animal is not properly trained or misbehaves after check-in, your host may request that it be removed. For Airbnb’s exact wording on this matter, click here.

Airbnb hosts cannot charge an additional fee to guests who bring a service animal, but they may charge for damage caused by the service animal. Guests with service animals are included in Airbnb’s non-discrimination policy.
Instead, pet-friendly hosts define their pet policy in their listing’s “house rules.” Their guests then accept those terms when they book that offer. If you violate your host’s pet policy (for example, if the pet causes damage to the property) you may be charged fees, deducted from your pet deposit, or charged separately (usually through the Airbnb Resolution Center).
If your pet is poorly trained, inexperienced in adapting to new environments, or prone to anxiety attacks, you may be better off leaving it at home with a pet sitter. TrustedHousesitters.com is a trusted and professional pet sitting website.
On Airbnb.com, enter your destination, dates and number of guests and then click “Search”. On the search results page, click “More filters”.

*If you don’t see this filter on your destination, you will need to manually browse the “house rules” section of the listings you find interesting (click on the listing and go to the “house rules” section).
Your search results now show pet-friendly listings. Once you’ve found a list that fits your taste and budget, scroll down to the house rules section of that list.
Under “House Rules,” click “Get Details.” The House Rules window may contain specific rules the host has about pets (such as the types of pets allowed, what the pet can and cannot do on the property, etc.).
* To find listings specifically suited for pet owners, look for features in their description and photos, such as food or water bowls, pet supplies, and a spacious yard. Some hosts also include recommendations on where to buy pet food and supplies, local dog parks, pet sitters and vets.

For example, some hosts do not accept breeds that are generally considered heavy spenders or very active. Some hosts ban male dogs to avoid territorial disputes with other pets. Another common discouragement is size (often due to lack of space).
While some dog policies may seem excessive, this is one of the best (and only) ways for hosts to ensure that only responsible pet owners are allowed to stay on their property. Other examples of dog rules set by hosts may include:
As mentioned above (regarding pets in general), damage caused by your dog may result in additional charges from the host. Some hosts require guests to pay a “dog fee” or “deposit” before check-in. Some lodges offer features that can enhance your dog’s stay, such as a dog blanket or designated bed.
Hosts are generally expected to accept a service dog without issue. However, it is best to contact potential hosts before booking to make sure the place is perfect for you, your dog and the host. If you have a service dog, see the section above about service animals.
Tips For Staying In A Pet Friendly Airbnb
When Airbnb hosts implement a pet policy, it’s usually aimed at dog owners. If you plan to bring a cat, please continue using the screen above to find a pet-friendly list, and notify the host that you will be bringing a cat (including age, breed and gender) . Remember, more people are allergic to cats than dogs.

Can I Stay At An Airbnb With My Service Dog?
Before you hit that “pet friendly” filter on your hosting page, there are a lot of things to think about. Let’s take a look at exactly what pet-friendly Airbnb listings mean for you.
As a country, we’ve always had high rates of pet ownership, but the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have sent Britain into a pet-loving frenzy. Pet ownership rates hovered around 45% throughout the decade before rising to 59% in 2020.
Among those who reported pet ownership, 33% had dogs, which means there are about 12 million pet dogs in our country. Many of these owners want to take their pets on vacation, so short-stay accommodations nationwide are in greater demand to offer pet-friendly accommodations.
Since 2020, interest in pet-friendly vacation homes has grown. Booking.com doubled the number of bookings for pet-friendly accommodation and Google search volume increased by 600%.

As a vacation home owner, if your property is pet friendly, it gives you more exposure to more potential customers and bookings. In addition to this opportunity to increase your income, you will find that owners who bring pets appreciate you as a host and are more aware of their behavior during their stay. If you’re wondering how to best advertise or promote your listing to get more bookings, check out our guide to advertising for Airbnb hosts.
Of course, there are also valid reasons for not accepting animals. Customers with allergies will avoid listings that allow animals, even if they are thoroughly cleaned. You’ll expect to spend more time and money on cleaning if you allow pets, which is why we recommend setting a pet fee on Airbnb.
Finally, you also run the risk of a pet damaging your property or another animal
